HIV and AIDS Mainstreaming Project

The overall outcome of the Joint UN Programme for HIV and AIDS is that Individuals, civil society, national and local public and private institutions are empowered to reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS among population at higher risks and mitigate its impact.

The UNDP component programme has the objective to assure that HIV, AIDS and Gender are effectively incorporated in the plans, budgets and sectoral monitoring processes through the development of the capacity and the higher availability of local capacities.

This will be achieved through building the capacity of a network of Civil Society organisations including the private sector which should function as multipliers in the training of its members in the incorporation of HIV, AIDS and Gender.

The intervention includes the support of the production of guidelines for the training of planners, trainers and technical personnel in the use of the tools and in the consolidation of a network of national facilitators. The development of the capacities through the supported institutionalisation of the training in incorporation of HIV, AIDS and Gender in national training institutions is a fundamental aspect to ensure the permanent development of the required technical capacity for the medium and long term.

Simultaneously UNDP resumes the responsibility in chairing and leading the UN working group on mainstreaming HIV, AIDS and Gender. The year 2007 will be the transition from individual activities of UN agencies to a joint programme. UNDP will coordinate and lead the process through the year 2007, aiming at a consensus on a joint UN programme for mainstreaming.
