Public Launch of the National Human Development Report on HIV and AIDS

Maputo, 13 December 2007 - The public launch of the National Human Development Report on HIV and AIDS took place on 13 December in a successful public event held at the Telecommunications Conference Centre in Maputo.

Around 50 people participated in the event, including representatives from the Government, the Academia, Civil Society and the Media.

The ceremony consisted of three main parts, including a presentation on the report’s highly participatory preparation process, by the Rector of the Higher Institute for International Relations (ISRI), Dr. Patricio José, a presentation on the National Human Development Index by Dr. João Loureiro, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the report’s Consultative Group; and a comprehensive presentation on the main findings, challenges and recommendations of the report made by Rosa Marlane Manjate, one the two Thematic Coordinators.

SARDC was prominent as the entity coordinating and leading the event, and the Executive Editor acted as the master of ceremony. In his closing remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator, Ndolamb Ngokwey said the report was a “high quality product” which deserved wide dissemination. He strongly urged the partnering institutions, ISRI, INE and SARDC, to ensure that the report is presented at and debate by the Assembly of the Republic and it is taken up to the Districts.

“UNDP is pleased to have supported a quality product that was entirely developed by Mozambicans”, Mr. Ndolamb concluded.
