Anti-Poverty Battle Can Only Be Won With Workers' Participation

Maputo, 4 May 2009 — Mozambican President Armando Guebuza declared on Thursday 30 April, that the battle against poverty can only be won with the "active and conscious" participation of all workers.

Over 100 Hunger Deaths in 12 Months

Maputo,4 May 2009 — Over 100 people are known to have died of hunger in Mozambique in the year ending 31 March 2009, according to the Deputy National Director of Agricultural Services, Marcelo Chaquisse.

Mozambique: New Ways Needed to Convey HIV Messages

Maputo, 14 April 209— Mozambique's first lady, Maria da Luz Guebuza, said on Tuesday that the country should review the way in which messages about preventing HIV infection are conveyed.

Speaking at the locality of Ndlala, in the southernmost district of Matutuine, as she wound up a four day tour of Maputo province, Guebuza said the age of the people giving the message was an important factor.

Government Claims Advances in Fight Against Poverty

Maputo,14 April 2009 — Over the past four years, the Mozambican gross domestic product has grown at an average rate of 7.7 per cent a year, and GDP per capita has risen from 301 US dollars in 2004 to 473 dollars in 2008, according to the Minister of Planning and Development, Aiuba Cuereneia.

Cuereneia was speaking on Wednesday, 25th in the country's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, in response to a request from deputies of the ruling Frelimo Party for information on the government's strategy for the fight against poverty.

MDGs in Mozambique: Education of Girls 'A Condition for Survival'

Maputo,14 April 2009 — "The education of girls is the condition for our survival as a people and for our economic triumph", declared Mozambican Education Minister Aires Aly on Wednesday 25th of March .

Speaking in the country's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, in response to a request from opposition deputies for information on the measures the government is taking to improve education, Aly said that substantial progress has been made in increasing the number of girls attending school.

Tracking MDGs in Mozambique:HIV/Aids Serious Threat in Prisons

Maputo 14 April 2009— As in many other countries, HIV/AIDS is a serious threat to Mozambique's prison population, Justice Minister Benvinda Levy warned on Monday , at the opening in Maputo of a National Seminar on Prison Health.She pointed out that international statistics show a rate of HIV prevalence inside prisons ranging from twice to 50 times the rate among the general population. "This presents significant challenges to the prison and public health authorities", she said.

The current size of the Mozambican prison population is around 14,000. This is 67 per 100,000 inhabitants, a fairly low rate by international standards. (By comparison, the United States incarcerates over 2.1 million of its citizens, a prison rate of 738 per 100,000).
