UN Strengthens Government's Early Recovery Coordination Capacity in Mozambique

Maputo, 7 March 2007 - Mozambique is heavily impacted by floods events combined with the effect of the tropical cyclone Favio as well as severe pockets of droughts. This scenario has been affecting negatively the progress made by the Government and its wide range of partners on the sustainability of human development.

Through its Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provided support to the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC), the Country Office and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Mozambique.

Hence, 1,100,000 USD (one million and hundred thousand Dollars) have been disbursed for the financial and technical support to the rapid emergency assessment and monitoring activities as well as those related to early recovery within a project entitled “Support to the Government of Mozambique to recovery from the 2007 floods and cyclones”.

Foreseen to last a year, the main objective of this intervention is to strengthen the coordination capacity of the Mozambique’s National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) in order to be able to lead Early Recovery process and come up with a realistic recovery plan for the country.

Additionally, the intervention is expected to support not only immediate early recovery and rehabilitation needs but strengthen INGC capacity for a mid and long term natural disaster management and preparedness.
