Maputo, 27 April 2004 – In response to the Mozambican Government official request of last February to the United Nations for assistance to the 2004 third general elections, the UN Electoral Assistance Division is undertaking a mission to Mozambique from 26 April to 5 May 2004.
The mission is composed of Mr. Nour Eddine Driss, Deputy Director, Mr. Marco Carmignani, Senior Political/Electoral Officer, both from the UN Electoral Assistance Division of the United Nations, and an international consultant, Mr. Roy Dalle Vedove, expert in information technology and voter registration systems.
The main objectives of the mission are as follows:
· To assess the national context within which the elections are planned and recommend the appropriate UN assistance, if any, to support their successful organization and conduct;
· To evaluate the projected material and financial resource needs in response to the assistance requested and contribute to the formulation of future technical assistance projects to be undertaken;
· To assess the existing activities and plans of international donors in connection with the technical and financial assistance to the electoral process in order to facilitate the coordination of external assistance by UNDP.
The mission is holding meetings with the authorities responsible for electoral matters, key members of Government and Parliament, political parties and representatives of donor countries.
