Un Mission In Maputo To Assess Local Elections Assistance - 5th May 2003

Maputo – Further to the Mozambican Government official request for assistance to the municipal elections of October 2003, the UN Electoral Assistance Division will undertake a mission to Mozambique as of Monday, 5 May.
The mission will be composed of Mr. Nour Eddine Driss, Deputy Director, and Marco Carmignani, Senior Political Officer of the UN Electoral Assistance Division of the United Nations.

The main objectives of the 7-day mission are as follows:

· To provide an assessment of the national context within which the elections are planned and recommend the appropriate UN assistance, if any, to support their successful organization and conduct;

  • To evaluate the projected material and financial resource needs in response to the assistance requested and contribute to the formulation of future technical assistance projects to be undertaken;
  • To assess the existing activities and plans of international donors in providing technical and financial assistance to the electoral process in order to facilitate the coordination of external assistance and avoid unnecessary expenditures or duplication.

Meetings are scheduled with the authorities responsible for electoral matters, key members of Government and Parliament, Political parties, representatives of Civil Society Organizations and representatives of donor countries.
