Maputo, 9 March 2007 - On Monday 05 March 2007, the Prime Minister of Mozambique, Luisa Dias Diogo, launched the Government’s Preliminary Plan for Post-Disaster Resettlement and Reconstruction. The 71 million USD recovery and reconstruction plan emphasizes on the resettlement of people, the reactivation of agricultural production, water supplies and roads, health and educational support, the reconstruction of public infrastructure and rapid recovery support to the private sector.

Distributed in a meeting with the humanitarian community, including United Nations (UN) agencies, NGOs, private sector and donor representatives, the plan also warns that extreme weather events such as major floods and cyclones are likely to become more frequent, thanks to global warning.

On the occasion, the UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Ndolamb Ngokwey, praised the government for the good leadership that had prevented loss of lives.

UNDP supported the Government to strengthening the coordination capacity for mainstreaming the early recovery strategy and plans across all the clusters.
