Canada Signs Agreement With Undp For Electoral Assistance To Mozambique - 10 September 2004

Maputo – The Canadian Government, through the Canadian International Development Agency, signed on the 9th of September 2004 a Grant Agreement with UNDP to provide assistance to the Mozambican General Elections scheduled for December of this year. The Grant, for Can$ 1.2 Million (approximately US$ 900,000), follows another Grant for the same amount disbursed in 2003 for assistance to the Mozambican Municipal Elections, held last year.

These Grants have been important contributions to UNDP’s project “Electoral Assistance to Mozambique”, which has also received support from the Governments of Italy, Portugal and Sweden.

The UNDP project was designed following the Government of Mozambique’s request for UNDP assistance, and has been providing the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) with technical assistance for the preparation and holding of both the 2003 Municipal Elections and the 2004 General Elections. The project has also contributed to the funding of electoral operations and materials, in support of civic education campaigns, training programmes and voting materials.

UNDP’s “Electoral Assistance to Mozambique” project has, with this latest contribution from the Canadian Government, a total budget of US$ 4.4 Million, of which US$ 2.0 Million are being allocated for this year’s elections.
