Support for Capacity Building to National Demining Institute
Previous efforts at strengthening national coordination and management of mine action went through the National Demining Commission (NDC), which was abolished in early 1999. In the same year, the Government of Mozambique established the National Demining Institute (IND) with a mandate to coordinate, supervise and manage the cost-effective execution of a national mine action plan.
IND became a semi-autonomous institution which reports directly to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Project aims at supporting the capacity of IND to fulfil its mandate, namely to plan, co-ordinate and manage mine action activities in the country. The overall impact should be improved cost-effectiveness, socio-economic impact and transparency. The expected outputs are as follows: Output 1 : A National Plan for Mine Action Produced and implemented; Output 2 : Compliance by Mozambique of its international obligations including the Ottawa Treaty (Mozambique has been declared free of landmine stockpiles); Output 3 : National mine information database established.
