ICT for Development Programme

This is a Programme designed to assist the Government of Mozambique in implementing the National ICT Policy Implementation Strategy approved in June 2002. The strategy aims at reducing poverty through promotion of ICT in health, education, private and governance sectors and by improving the basic infrastructure to provide universal access to citizens and to narrow down the digital divide.

This is a catalytic project, aimed at demonstrating results to mobilise support from partners for country wide initiatives.

The project includes building Provincial Digital Resource Centres (CPRD) and mobile units, which aim at becoming important training and knowledge centres e.g. offering universal and affordable email access to citizens.

At national level, an ICT Country Knowledge Base is constructed for recording information about national IT infrastructure, capacity and individual IT experts. In addition it handles information about applications and technologies used by government, academic, private and NGO organizations in Mozambique.
Currently two CPRDs are in place (Inhambane and Tete) and ICT Country Knowledge Base and pilot Mobile Unit are being finalized.

The programme also supports national ICT Policy Commission in institutionalizing the coordination and implementation unit to secure sector wide implementation of the national ICT Policy and ICT Policy Implementation Strategy.
