UN System in Mozambique Under New Leadership

Maputo, 18 September 2006 – Since August 2006, the United Nations System in Mozambique is under new leadership. Mr. Ndolamb Ngokwey, a national of the Democratic Republic of Congo, began his assignment as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.

Mr. Ngokwey joined the United Nations with UNICEF in 1986, and has ever since held increasing responsibilities as senior programme officer (in Benin and Senegal), representative (in Cape Verde and Guinea), UNICEF Area Representative (in the Caribbean Area Office in Bridgetown), and UNICEF Deputy Regional Director (West and Central Africa Regional Office in Abidjan). From 2002 to 2006, Mr. Ngokwey was UNICEF Director of the Office of the Secretary of the Executive Board, in New York.

Prior to joining the UN, Mr. Ngokwey was a Professor of Social Sciences and Public Health at the University of Lubumbashi (DRC) and the Director of the University Interdisciplinary Center for Development.

He also taught in Benin, Belgium, and the USA and was Principal Investigator of the United Nations University (Tokyo) on Qualitative Evaluation of Nutrition and Primary Health Care Programmes. Mr. Ngokwey has published articles and books on development issues.

He has a Master’s degree in Anthropology, a Master’s degree in Public Health and a PhD in Sociology/Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
