Electrification of the MV Chibuto Under the joint UN efforts, the Delivering as One is giving results in the field

The implementation of the UN reform in Mozambique is bringing UN agencies together in the acquisition and delivery of goods and services, for more cost effective interventions and scaled up results.

Recently, and during the visit of UNDG Chair and UNDP Administrator, Mr. Kemal Dervis, the Operations Management team delivered a concrete result that the Administrator inaugurated.

The electrification of the Millennium Village in Chibuto was possible due to the savings in travel obtained from the implementation of the common services led by the Operations Management Team. Through the UNDP Service Center, which is in fact transforming into a UN Service Center, the travel services were grouped to serve all agencies which has allowed savings amounting to $ 11,000.00, which have been allocated directly to the wiring and equipment for the above mentioned Village electrification and particularly to the Science and Technology for Human Development Center.

Today, and with this social benefit to the community, thorough the promotion of the Global Compact and Public Private Partnerships, the UNDP Lead joint programme (UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, WHO) actually provides ICT access and training to the villagers, a user friendly web access for children (Hole in the Wall), night classes for adults (literacy, numeracy, management and entrepreneurship, etc.), cold chain for health and improved water access for domestic and agricultural use.

The electrification of the village has also had an immediate impact in fuel reduction, due to the transference of generator use to poser, therefore becoming a greener actor.

More to come, the commitment and continued effort towards the Delivering as One in and towards the implementation of the common services promises more of such results.
