Maputo, 14 June 2007 - A United Nations Civil Society Advisory Committee (UNCSAC) has been established in Mozambique to assist in the implementation of the accelerated UN reform process in the country. The 25 member committee constituted by a broad spectrum of well known leaders of civil society organizations will help monitor, evaluate and comment on the UN work in the country.
Since its launch in April, the UNCSAC has already met with the Resident Coordinator Mr. Ndolamb Ngokwey, some members of the UN Country Team as well as Civil Society Focal Points within the UN Agencies.
Mr. Ngokwey considered the established of this committee a very important development stating that the “civil society is one of our main partners; they play an important role in supporting Mozambique attaining the MDGs, promoting policy and advocacy debates and accelerating service delivery to the communities, representing the voices of the voiceless; civil society is also a beneficiary group of our current UNDAF.”
Civil society representatives have also welcomed the establishment of the committee. “We are convinced that the UN has considered our recommendations, made along our participation in the High level Panel for Greater Coherence, during the consultation phase for the UN reform”, said Ms. Graça Samo, Vice President of Forum Mulher and UNCSAC committee member.
The second Committee meeting, held on June 14, served to share with the Committee members the development of the current UNDAF and its alignment with the PARPA II. “This Committee will walk along with us during the UNDAF implementation, allowing us to be more effective in our actions, supporting us in the Monitoring and Evaluation process and contributing to the elaboration of the next programme cycle, ensuring our results are related to the PARPA,” said Mrs. Petra Lantz, the UNFPA Resident Representative, during the presentation.
At the meeting there was also the presentation of the CSO mapping exercise which created an opportunity for strengthened partnerships between all stakeholders: UN agencies, implementing partners and beneficiary civil society agents at large. A new meeting with all above was agreed by all to take place as soon as next week, enriching and enlarging the debate. FDC and UNDP will lead this new presentation and debate.
The committee was established following extensive consultations with a range of civil society actors and all UN agencies. Its twenty five members represent a broad diversity of sectors and constituencies, from all areas of UN interventions to experiences in working with the UN.
