Maputo 17 February 2010 - The first ever interdisciplinary and inter-university Mozambican journal on development issues was launched on Friday, 12 of February 2010 at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo. The journal on economic, policy and development studies is published by a consortium of eight Mozambican universities and is produced with UNDP support. The journal contains scientific-based information produced in Mozambique, about Mozambique and for Mozambicans.
Maputo, 29 January 2009 – Nonprofit organizations operating in Mozambique are called to apply for HIV prevention funds, worth for US$2.0 million. UNDP, through its Rapid Results Fund Unit, is calling civil society organizations and other non-state actors for proposals in key prevention activity areas; namely in reduction of multiple sexual partnerships, reproductive health, HIV and Tuberculosis and male circumcision. The last day to submit applications to UNDP is the 10th of February 2010.

Mozambique is planning to develop a national electronic firearms register. It will be established by the Ministry of Interior with the support from UNDP, Brazilian NGO Viva Rio and the Civilian Police of Rio de Janeiro. In the beginning of December, Viva Rio’s Armed Violence Control team and the Director of the Civilian Police of Rio de Janeiro’s Police Laboratory visited Mozambique to identify the technical, human resource and logistical requirements to install the national database.
Maputo, 4 December 2009 - Prevention is better than cure, advises the slogan of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) in Mozambique, a country heavily exposed to threats of floods, cyclones, earthquakes and drought. In demonstration of this commitment, an INGC-organized and UN-supported (under ‘delivering as one’) simulation exercise for flood and cyclone preparedness took place on 26th November 2009.
– On this year’s World AIDS Day the UNAIDS family, including UNDP, and the XVIII International AIDS Conference AIDS 2010 are announcing a global call for nominations for the 2010 Red Ribbon Award. The Award honours community-based organisations for their contributions in responding to the AIDS epidemic. All Mozambican community organizations in the field are invated to come in.
Maputo, 25 November 2009 - It has been three years since the Delivering as One UN initiative was launched. It is an effort to avoid the duplication of activities and raise efficiency within the UN. This is done by increasing cooperation and information exchange between the various UN agencies. One such country piloting this initiative is Mozambique, a country that faces wide-spread problems, such as poverty, infectious diseases, and lack of access to education.

It’s 5am, Sunday morning, and the only people to be seen on the deserted main street of the district town of Mopeia, Zambezia is a group of three Graduates from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), awaiting transport to the provincial capital of Quelimane. From there, they will continue on to the district of Mocuba, to continue the collection of information on disaster related losses, as part of a UNDP sponsored project.

With funds from the UNDP Spain MDG Achievement Fund, six UN agencies are helping this district to adapt to climate change.
