Maputo, 26 September 2006 – Mozambique has recorded significant improvements in economic growth complemented by advances in human and social fronts in recent years. The incidence of absolute poverty in the country reduced by 15.3 per cent, from 69.4 per cent in 1996/97 to 54.1 per cent in 2002/03.
Despite these achievements, the country continues to face great challenges to meeting its mid term goals as stated in the Poverty Reduction Strategic Plan, and in a longer term, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In this context, Mozambique hosts a National MDG-based planning workshop from 27 to 29 September in Maputo. The training workshop comes as a follow up of the UN Millennium Project report entitled “Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieving the Millennium Development Goals”, the 2005 World Summit Outcome Document and national development agenda.
Organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, the MDG-based planning workshop will bring together about 70 participants mainly from the planning and budgeting departments of Government institutions, private sector, academia and development partners representatives.
The three-day training workshop is aimed at providing national actors with MDG-based tools, techniques and methodologies to further enrich their capacities in policy development.
Opening remarks are expected to be delivered by a representative of the Ministry of Planning and Development, the coordinating Government entity, and by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative, Mr. Ndolamb Ngokwey.
The training is carried out in the aftermath of the launching of the Mozambique’s fifth National Human Development Report that took place this month which elected as its central theme the MDGs, with special focus on the challenges that the country is confronted with in meeting the development priorities internationally agreed by the UN General Assembly, in 2000.
