The recently released results of the 2009/10 Agricultural Census underline the challenges Mozambique is
facing in promoting agricultural production and productivity. With 69% of the population living in the rural
areas, the majority of which are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood, the sector is closely linked to
MDG 1 on poverty reduction and food security.

One of the key indices is the HDI which is considered a central measure of human development.

In 2008 UNDP Mozambique supported the development and publication of the CIVICUS Civil Society Index 2007. This publication, The Mirror of Narcissus – Knowledge and Self-conscience for a better development of the Mozambican Civil Society, is a participatory assessment of the former book. It describes the experiences in implementing the Civil Society Index, it tells the lessons learned and recommendations that can be made by the Civil Society itself and the the donors and the government. Published in electronic format by UNDP in March 2011.
In this national MDG report emphasis is given to the progress achieved, particularly in the expansion of education and health services, as well as in the promotion of gender equality. This publication, produced for the World MDG Summit 2010, is based on latest statistical data from the years 2007 and the 2008 and the sources being the Government of Mozambique, National Statistics Institute, and other official sectors. Published in January 2011. The former national MDG reports were published in 2002, 2005 and 2008. UNDP/UN Mozambique has technically and financially supported the production of the reports.
The book on Gender and Human Rights in Mozambique is the first Mozambican publication to cover human rights from a gender perspective. It is written by Mozambican academics in the fields of law and sociology, and is produced by the Eduardo Mondlane University and UNDP Mozambique. It is published both in English and Portuguese.
