Maputo, 17 March 2011 – UNDP Mozambique yesterday handed over office equipment, including computers and scanners to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to improve and accelerate the performance of the Business Services and Information Centers (Balcões de Attendimento Único, BAU).  The BAUs are one-stop shops that are providing services for business and investors at central level and in the provinces.

"UNDP recognizes that trade has a very strong role in combating poverty. However, this is possible only if trade policy formulation, management and implementation take into account this role.”, said UNDP Country Director Jocelyn Mason during the ceremony, where 40 desktop computers, 40 scanners, three servers, four laptops, and 40 software packages were delivered.

UNDP Country Director declared that this UNDP support will continue throughout the year. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce will now focus on training a target group of provincial service centre staff members.

Under the trade and private sector partnership project, the UNDP support is directed  to building the capacity of trade research by academic institutions, improving the quality of trade statistics, policy formulation and analysis, improving the quality of business information services,  and in increasing the capacity of agro-processing at local level.
