Maputo, 9 November 2009 - UNDP has recently donated 14 vehicles to the Government of Mozambique, as part of its ongoing programme of cooperation. The vehicles were presented to the Ministry of Environmental Coordination, to the Ministry for Women and Social Action, and to the Police.
A total of ten vehicles with appropriate accessories were handed over to the Police as part of the UNDP Election support project. The vehicles were delivered to Sofala and Nampula provinces where they will play an important role in maintaining law and order, especially during the period of election returns.
On October 27, three double cabin vehicles were presented to the Minister for Women and Social Action (MMAS). In a ceremony at the ministry, the Minister, Mrs. Virgilia Matabele received the car keys from Mr. Ndolamb Ngokwey, Resident Representative of UNDP.
The three vehicles will be used by the National Directorate of Women in the provinces of Gaza and Tete. The vehicles will enable the ministry to extend its interventions to the district level, where transport limitations have in the past made access difficult. The donation was realized as part of the UNDP Gender Mainstreaming project which has a particular focus on combating domestic violence against women.
A smaller hand-over ceremony was held at the Ministry of Environment Coordination (MICOA) also on 27th of October, when UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mrs. Naomi Kitahara handed a double cabin vehicle to the Director of Planning and Studies in the ministry, Mr. Erasmo Nhachungue (see the picture).
In cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Coordination, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNDP Mozambique is supporting the Poverty and Environment initiative. The vehicle will help the ministry in its daily work during the second phase of the programme implementation and during their monitoring visits to the field.
The UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative has been invaluable in assisting Mozambique and other countries in integration of environmental management into poverty reduction strategies and other development plans, and in the implementation of these plans.
