Innovation Prize to the Technology Village of Namialo

Durban, 22 December 2010 -  The Technology Village of Namialo from Nampula Province won an Award for Innovative Management among 27 African countries in Durban City, in South Africa, on 17 December. The Mozambican innovative model came fourth place in the competition organized by the Secretariat of the African Association for Innovation in Public Management.

The Technology Village of Namialo began during the early stages of the pilot of the National Decentralized Planning and Finance Programme PPFD in Nampula funded by UNDP/UNCDF.

“UNDP is very proud to be associated to the Technology Village of Namialo, the model that seeks effective and sustainable pro-poor local solutions for local development”, says Fátima Amade, the Decentralization Programme Specialist. 

The Technology Village is located in Namialo District and aims at promoting research and knowledge transfer around alternative and low cost construction materials as well as at training the Rural Micro Enterprises Associations (MERAs) focusing on housing.

As part of the African Association for Innovation in Public Management in 2009 the Ministry of Public Service invited the provinces to submit their experiences. Namialo center was selected to represent Mozambique among 27 other African countries for the innovation prize. 

Namialo Technology Village team is very happy for their success. They are also fully aware of their responsibility to improve the performance of the Village in the future and committed to reach for higher rankings in similar contests.UNDP is committed in supporting this kind of innovation centers as part of its capacity development mission.
