Maputo, 19 November, 2010 – Having only five years to go to the deadline of the Millennium Development Goals, UNDP Mozambique appeals to the local business community to vitalize their social responsibility commitments under the Global Compact initiative and even invite new companies to join this effort - an opportunity to fight together against poverty. In partnership with the Centre for Investment Promotion and the Institute of Directors UNDP organized a breakfast meeting with the private sector on the 11th  of November, in Maputo.

“I take this opportunity to encourage the business community to engage in new, inclusive pro-poor business models, said UNDP acting Resident Coordinator Jocelyn Mason. “These businesses create opportunities for the poorest for income generation; give them access to services and goods, and thereby contribute to poverty reduction and the achievement of the MDGs.”

Jocelyn Mason reminded participants that poverty alleviation is the biggest challenge for Mozambique and the private sector has a mandate in this regard:

“We acknowledge particularly the role of the private sector as an engine for development. The private sector’s contribution to poverty reduction is embodied in its ability to create jobs, produce essential goods, and create wealth. The private sector’s social responsibility activities are also important to ensure that economic growth promotes the welfare of citizens.”

Mr. Mason reiterated that UNDP’s contribution for the fight against poverty in Mozambique involves multifaceted actions, since poverty is a multifaceted and multidimensional phenomenon.

The Global Compact is a voluntary initiative that relies on transparency and provides space for innovation. It was launched in 2000 as a policy platform and a practical framework for companies committed to sustainable, socially responsible and inclusive business practices.
In Mozambique, this initiative was launched in 2003, and it has been coordinated since 2006 by FEMA - Business Forum for the Environment. The current Steering Committee include representatives from Motorcare, BCI, KPMG, Eco-AIDS, Ministry of Women and Social Action, FEMA and UNDP.
