According to Goal 3, there should be as many girls as there are boys in the Mozambican primary schools by 2015, i.e. the girl-boy ratio should be 1. According to the national MDG Report 2010 this target by this indicator will be probably met.
The female illiteracy rate in Mozambique, though still high, has decreased in the course of time. In 2004 it was 66.2% and it dropped to 56% in 2009. Though it is one of the gender indicators, there is no nationally set goal for 2015.
The percentage of seats held by women in the Parliament of Mozambique has increased since 1997. It was 28% in 2003, 38.2% in 2008 and is 39.2% in 2010. The national goal of this indicator by 2015 is to reach half of the seats for women.
The education sector is showing considerable growth considering gender in general, while the cultural habits are a constraint, in rural areas especially.
