UNDP Mozambique Annual Report 2009: Concrete results through support to capacity development

Maputo, 2 June 2010 - UNDP Mozambique’s Annual Report was published at the end of May. It illustrates a considerable range of results and highlights achieved through UNDP’s support to the government in its efforts to eradicate poverty, foster democratic governance, prevent crisis, adapt to climate change, and provide policy and economic analysis. Besides government, UNDP works with civil society organizations, other UN agencies and various other partners in Mozambique.

According to UNDP Resident Representative and UN Resident Coordinator Ndolamb Ngokwey, in 2009 UNDP has played a central role in the Delivering as One (One UN) Joint Programmes, as participating agency in eight and convener in four, out of eleven. “In addition, last year saw also UNDP improving its operational performance and playing an important role with other agencies is realizing greater efficiencies by harmonizing and, wherever possible, joining, UN agencies’ operational processes.”

UNDP’s overall delivery of funding in 2009 was over $18 million, an increase of $1 million over 2008, with the help of continuing strong partnerships with bilateral donors. The distribution of funding also registered a shift, with support from traditional donors complemented by funding from the UN One Fund to UNDP implemented activities in the Joint Programmes.

“2009 has been an important year for UNDP and the UN system in Mozambique, in which notable results have been achieved. Looking forward, 2010 is even more important, marking the year in which the UN will develop its new United Nations Development Framework (UNDAF) in support of the government’s new five year development plan.
